About Above the Mark

Construction is expensive. Confusion makes it worse.

Above the Mark exists to help homeowners understand the project in front of them, compare their options, and make better construction decisions before money, time, and frustration start piling up.

Why Above the Mark exists

Homeowners are asked to make five-figure decisions in an industry they may only interact with a few times in their lives.

The information gap is expensive.

A contractor may understand the scope, sequencing, labor, equipment, risk, and economics of a project immediately. A homeowner usually does not. That does not mean the homeowner should have to make a blind decision.

Above the Mark was built to narrow that gap. The goal is not to turn every homeowner into a contractor. It is to give you enough clarity to understand what you are buying, what the alternatives really involve, and where the biggest risks or unanswered questions are.

The perspective behind it

Built from the field, not from generic home-improvement advice.

I’m John Butler. My career has been spent inside construction operations: working around field crews, training structural repair professionals, developing managers, coaching production leaders, and helping construction businesses solve the expensive problems that show up when scope, communication, process, or expectations break down.

That experience shaped Above the Mark. I have seen what good construction operations look like, what poor clarity costs, where homeowners get surprised, and how quickly a project can get harder when the important questions are not answered early.

The advice here is meant to be practical, understandable, and grounded in how construction actually gets planned and delivered.

Field perspective Built around real jobsite conditions, production realities, customer communication, and the details that materially change a project.
Leadership and training perspective Years spent training field professionals and coaching construction leaders on execution, accountability, communication, and customer experience.
Decision perspective The goal is not simply to produce a number. It is to make the tradeoffs, assumptions, and next decision easier to see.
What we help you do

Understand the project. Compare the paths. Make the decision.

Above the Mark is built around the decisions that happen before and around the construction work, when better clarity can still save money, time, and frustration.

01 / UNDERSTAND

Get clear on the project.

Understand likely scope, cost drivers, assumptions, complexity, and the questions that need to be answered before moving forward.

02 / COMPARE

Compare real options.

Look beyond the headline price and compare hiring it out, doing it yourself, or splitting the project intelligently.

03 / DECIDE

Move forward with context.

Evaluate bids, contractors, project plans, and next steps with a better understanding of what matters and why.

What Above the Mark is

An independent construction decision resource for homeowners.

Tools, education, and advisory help designed to make residential construction easier to understand before you commit to a path.

What Above the Mark is not

A contractor trying to steer every project toward a sale.

Sometimes hiring a professional is the right answer. Sometimes DIY is reasonable. Sometimes a hybrid approach makes sense. The goal is to help you understand the tradeoff, not force every project toward the same outcome.

How Above the Mark helps

Start with information. Add a person when the decision needs one.

Some projects only need a better starting point. Others need a human conversation. Above the Mark is being built so you can use as much—or as little—help as the project actually requires.
